Second Sight - Black Raven Brewing

It’s no secret that Black Raven is one of my favorite breweries in the Seattle area.

Located in Redmond, the tap room offers a friendly, clean, and warm environment with great nearby food you’re welcome to bring inside and some damn good beer on tap.

It’s my weekend coffee shop any time I get the opportunity to head that direction, and a great place to sit with my laptop for a while coding, writing, or just relaxing.

Second Sight is a beer of theirs I haven’t had before; while I don’t have much experience with scotch ales, I have faith in Black Raven and can’t wait to give this one a try.

Appearance

IMG_0462This beautiful beer pours a deep copper color with an off-white smooth, creamy head reminiscent of the froth on top of a latte.

Lacing on the head is very nice and sticks around, and while dark, the body of this beer is crystal clear; it’s easy to see my hand on the other side of the glass. I’m seeing very tight, small carbonation bubbles lightly dancing up the center and sides of the glass.

This is a flat-out gorgeous beer and is getting a perfect appearance score from me.

Appearance Rating: 3 / 3

Aroma

Right at the front of the nose I’m getting bold, deep notes of caramel, toffee, and raisin. There’s a light presence of earthy hops cutting the sweetness nicely, but overall dominated by over-ripened fruit and dark bread.

The aroma is very well-balanced while leaning on the sweet side as I’d expect from the style, and overall is very smooth and inviting.

Aroma Rating: 10 / 12

Flavor

As I’d expect from the nose, right at the front of the tongue I’m hit with massive fruity sweetness with lots of raisin, date, and toffee notes. The initial flavor is very earthy and smooth, with a slight resinous hop bitterness in the middle.

This beer has a long, drawn-out woody finish with a slight alcoholic aftertaste. The alcohol is very well-integrated in the experience, giving a warming sensation at the end without being overpowering.

This is an amazingly well-crafted beer with almost perfect balance, and each sip is a fun ride through the complex flavor profile.

Flavor Rating: 18 / 20

Mouthfeel

Creamy is the best word to describe the mouthfeel of this beer, and oh does it fit with the rest of its characteristics. The body of the beer is full and mouthcoating, but not overbearing with the lively, tight carbonation dancing across your tongue. The warm, subtly alcoholic finish perfectly complements the profile, and it’s getting a perfect mouthfeel score from me.

Mouthfeel Rating: 5 / 5

Overall

IMG_0465If I were to describe this beer with one sentiment, it’d be the fact that I simply can’t think of a way it could be better. The full creaminess of the body works incredibly well alongside the beer’s sweet, warming qualities.

This is the type of beer I’d want to drink curled up by the fire with a warm blanket and a good book. It’s something to savor, and is only getting more flavorful as it warms and opens up. Second Sight may not be an everyday drinker, but it’s definitely a worthwhile indulgence and I’d highly recommend picking some up.

Overall Rating: 9 / 10

Final Score: 9 - Outstanding

World-class example of style.
